Parental Engagement in Action

Friday 6th – Sunday 8th November 2026 : 9.00am-5.00pm

Course Overview

A 3-day Accredited Training Course for Therapists to skilfully engage Parents in their child’s therapeutic journey

Active participation of parents in their child’s therapeutic process is fundamental to achieving successful therapeutic outcomes. If therapists can provide care, guidance, and psychoeducation for parents, it will better support the dyadic components of the parent-child relationship.

Although there is consensus among child therapists that effective consultation with parents can maximize beneficial outcomes for children, parental involvement in the process often does not extend beyond the intake session, formal reviews, and brief periodic check-ins.

Effective Parental Consultation will

This 3 days training will assist therapists in beginning a process with parents to break patterns and replace them with more positive alternatives.  The course introduces a trauma-informed lens to parental engagement, exploring the impact of intergenerational trauma, parental attachment styles and mentalisation.

Participants will be introduced to The Needs Paradox®, a concept which describes the internal conflict in traumatised children between their innate need for connection and the defensive strategies developed to survive relational harm. We will explore how these dynamics impact parent-child interactions and how to support parents in navigating their child’s resistance to care through the integration of parent-child reunions within the therapeutic process, ensuring the parent remains symbolically and relationally central to the child’s healing.

The therapist will feel empowered to work alongside the parent and individualise their consultations, helping parents navigate challenges that they may be experiencing with their child and within the parent-child relationship.
