Description

Neurodivergent children and adolescents may experience sensory overload, masking, shutdown, or a strong need for predictability and sameness. These responses are often adaptive and protective. Without a regulation informed and affirming lens, therapists may unintentionally misinterpret communication styles, processing differences, or self regulation strategies as resistance or noncompliance.

This 90-minute workshop introduces a clinically grounded approach to neurodivergent affirming practice in expressive and play based therapy. Participants will differentiate sensory overload, skill based challenges, masking, and emotional activation using observable indicators in behavior, dialogue, creative expression, and relational patterns.

Common therapy mismatches will be addressed, including overly open ended tasks, pressured eye contact, rapid verbal processing demands, and lack of structure. Participants will explore practical adjustments to expressive modalities such as art, story, movement, rhythm, structured dialogue, sensory engagement, and symbolic work in order to increase predictability, autonomy, and communication access. Affirming practice will be framed as increasing access and safety rather than lowering expectations.
